Report to Members & Stakeholders

January 2000

Crime Statistics - This is a comparison of Part 1 crimes (the most serious type) that occurred on the near southside over the last seven years. The "beat" numbers on the table refer to the geographical areas shown on the diagram. Statistics for similar beats in the Downtown are presented for comparison. The dedicated public safety work of the police officers at Neighborhood Policing District #8 has given the neighborhood a chance to recover economically. Although more needs to be done, this is an extraordinary accomplishment. Say thanks often to our police officers headquartered at the corner of West Magnolia and College.

T&P Depot - The Medical District enjoys collateral benefits from the extraordinary success of Downtown redevelopment. The first specific proposal to come out of the Lancaster corridor redevelopment initiative is the plan to adaptively reuse the historic railroad depot building as a hotel. As the project moves forward it will generate all sorts of exciting redevelopment possibilities for the area.

Implosion — The Harris Doctor’s Building on Fifth Avenue is scheduled to be imploded at 8:00 am, Sunday, February 20 to make way for a planned ambulatory services building, which will include an outpatient surgery center.

Rosedale - Replacement of the water and sewer pipes under West Rosedale Street between Main and Interstate 35 will begin in March or April. The contract to widen the street in that area will be let in August - this year! Construction on the section of Rosedale between Main and Forest Park is projected to start in January 2001.

Nonprofit Coordination - We receive inquiries from nonprofit organizations looking for office space in the Medical District. The idea of finding a building that would permit the co-location of a group of non-profits is being discussed. Organizations interested in exploring this option should contact us.

Hot Damn Tamales! - The growing demand for "tamales" ordered over the internet and shipped to customers has required the expansion of this new Magnolia Avenue business into adjacent space that was previously occupied by the Jazz Café.

Vickery Park & Ride - The terminal for the "T's" Dallas Express bus operation will be relocated from 9th & Jones to the Vickery Park & Ride when construction is finished. About 100 cars per day now park at the Jones Street site while their owners ride the bus to Dallas. The Airporter park and ride service will remain at the East Belknap terminal.

Annual Meeting - About 70 members of the company attended Fort Worth South's annual meeting on January 12. The annual report will be mailed to members in the next two weeks.
